PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially preferable process for producing a high- quality aromatic polycarbonate which has a good color and suffers less discoloration and less reduction of the molecular weight even at a high temperature of 380 deg.C or above, in the production of an aromatic polycarbonate by the melt- polycondensation process. SOLUTION: There is provided a process for producing an aromatic polycarbonate by polymerizing an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diaryl carbonate in the molten state, wherein the diaryl carbonate used has (a) a water-content of 200 wt.ppm or less, (b) a titanium content of 1 wt.ppm or less and (c) an o,o'-biphenylene carbonate content of 3 wt.ppm or less.
