According to the inventive method for optimally controlling the cooling capacity of an automobile motor, at least one temperature sensor is positioned in a location of the motor that is particularly sensitive to a temperature overload. The control device controls or regulates the flow of coolant and/or a fan in such a way that a predetermined maximum temperature is not exceeded in the location where the temperature sensor is installed. This instalment location can be in the area of a cylinder or a cylinder head, for example. This enables the cooling capacity, e.g. the motor temperature to be brought up to the optimal temperature of the sensitive component without damaging said component.
