The reinforcing structure (4) for protecting the dam wall (1) against a collision with a boat is suspended from the top edge of the wall. The bottom part of this reinforcing structure is supported against the dam wall on the opposite side to the water course. The dam wall comprises elongated boards (2, 3) which have a trough-shaped cross-section and are joined together along their side edges (9, 10) by fasteners (5). The dam wall has a pleated cross-section with hills and valleys, at least one valley being bridged on the non-water side by a plate-like reinforcing structure. An Independent claim is also included for a method of erecting the dam wall, where a board and reinforcing structure are fixed into position and concrete is then poured into the space between the boards and reinforcing structure.
