PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device that uses neither electric field nor electric current, excited only by the intensity of light, can control light, has a light quality display function having a high contrast ratio, can be made a large size screen, can conduct a set light emitting operation, and can greatly improve the efficiency of optical switches. SOLUTION: The device is provided with an optical waveguide (or optical fiber) 1, a transparent electrode 2 which is arranged to be orthogonal or approximately orthogonal to the waveguide (or plural fiber) 1 and a liquid crystal element 3 which is arranged at the crossing point of the waveguide (or optical fiber) 1 and the electrode 2 and responds to the signal of the electrode 2. The difference between the refractive index of the element 3 and the waveguide 1 is set equal to or less than 0.07 or desirably set to zero and at least an optical display function is provided. |
