A non-rotating horizontal tubular reactor (1) for mechanical and/or thermal processing of a bulk solid or paste-form material has internal moving paddles (10) to convey and/or agitate the material in the presence of grinding or cleaning balls (15) inside the reactor chamber. The paddles (10) are mounted on a hollow shaft (7) passing axially through the reactor chamber (3). A conveying device, e.g. a screw conveyor (13), which acts in a direction opposite to that of the paddles (10), is provided inside the shaft to return the balls (15) from the outlet to the inlet end of the reactor.
