The four-stroke internal combustion engine has a linearly moving piston in a cylinder, inlet and exhaust valves, an ignition device in the combustion chamber above the piston and a connecting rod joining the piston to the crankshaft. Two separating cylinders (1,2) are incorporated, each of which comprises a main cylinder space (1.1,2.1) and a secondary cylinder space (1.2,2.2), one behind the other. In each cylinder a double piston (3,4) is formed, comprising a main piston (3.1,4.1) and a secondary piston (3.2,4.2) rigidly connected to one another. The main piston moves in the main cylinder space and the secondary piston in the secondary cylinder space. The combustion chamber above the top dead center of the main piston is connected with that beneath the bottom dead center of the secondary piston of the outer cylinder by an overflow channel (5,6). Each connecting rod (7,8) is divided and is connected with the crankshaft via opposing crank pins.
