PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques whereby a disc-shaped subject can be recognized irrespective of the rotating position of the subject. SOLUTION: The binary image of a disc-shaped subject is obtained. Pixels constituting predetermined concentric circles whose center is located at the center of the binary image are specified. A plurality of feature data not dependent on the rotating position of the subject are obtained from the pixels of the concentric circles. A table for managing 2K pairs of standard data about K kinds of fronts and backs which the subject may have is prepared. By comparing the feature data of the subject to each standard data, the subject is recognized. In one embodiment, complex similarity method is used for this recognition, with various distances also being usable.
