PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rust preventive steel sheet having excellent press workability as the one for an automobile fuel tank and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: This rust preventive steel sheet for a fuel tank is obtained by providing the surface of a steel sheet having a composition containing, by mass, <=0.01% C, <=0.2% Si, <0.6% Mn, <=0.04% P, <=0.1% acid soluble Al, <=0.01% N, one or two kinds of Ti and Nb by the atomic equivalent of the (C+N) content or above to 0.5% in total, 0.0001 to 0.005% B and one or more kinds selected from Cu, Cr and Ni by 0.1 to 0.5% in total in the case of Ti-Nb added steel or containing one or more kinds selected from Cu, Cr and Ni by 0.002 to 0.5% in total in the case of Ti-Nb-V-Mo-Zr added steel or V-Mo-Zr added steel, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities with a coating layer having Al-based chemical components containing 2 to 13% Si, and the balance >=50% Al.
