PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device exhibiting an excellent half tone. SOLUTION: As regards a ferroelectric liquid crystal display device A, in a lower substrate 20 pixel electrodes 12 and active elements 10 are formed on a transparent substrate 14 and an alignment layer 8 is laminated thereon, and in an upper substrate 19 a common electrode 4 and an alignment layer 6 are successively laminated on a transparent substrate 2. Furthermore, a liquid crystal layer 7 is constructed by applying an AC electric field to a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystalline (meth)acrylate monomer in the state exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase and making ultraviolet rays or electron rays irradiate the composition so as to make the liquid crystalline (meth)acrylate monomer photoset and polymerize. |
