DATA CARRIER COMPRISING A DATA MEMORY AND AN ACCESS METER

The invention relates to a data carrier comprising a data memory that can be read out via a reading device. The data carrier is further provided with an access meter that detects the number of accesses to the data memory and that prevents the data memory from being accessed by the reading device once a defined meter reading is reached. The access meter is configured as a separate integrated circuit that prevents, owing to its design, manipulation of the data stored therein. The data memory and the access meter are functionally and electrically separate from one another. Before the data memory can be read out, a mutual authentication of reading device and access meter is required.
