PURPOSE: To provide a VFD(vacuum fluorescent display) whose cost can be reduced and which has large degree of freedom in its design by allowing a RAM for display to have a small capacity while using simultaneously a simple grid control and a plural grid control. CONSTITUTION: When display data are data for dynamic drive, the display data consist of data of only data equivalent to one grid and the display data are identified by control data and the display data are transmitted to a simple grid control part 30A and the data are transmitted to a grid driver 34 and an anode driver 32 and, then, anode electrodes having the display data are successively lighted as grids are successively scanned. When the display data are data for universal drive, the data are once stored in a RAM for display 27 and after the scanning of the dynamic drive of one cycle is completed, this display enters into the scanning of the universal drive by being controlled by the universal grid control part 30B and plural grids for universal drive are selected and, then, anode electrodes having the display data are successively lighted.
