A method for removing water from the bottom of oil storage containers by introducing a water-absorbing material into the water and removing the water-containing material from the container comprises using a water-absorbing material (I) comprising a crosslinked hydrogel-forming polymer in compact solid form. An independent claim is also included for the production of (I) by casting a polymerization-ready liquid monomer reaction mixture in a mold, optionally in the presence of materials with a high surface area and/or a capillary or fibrous structure, and drying and packaging the product.
