DECODER AND ITS METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoder and a decoding method that can start decoding directly after the occurrence of an error in data or of merged data in the middle of variable length code data in the case of special reproduction. SOLUTION: The decoder is provided with: a coded data input means that receives coded data including a variable length code; a 1st start code detection means 121 that detects a start code included in the received coded data; a data sequence insertion means 122 that inserts a predetermined prescribed data sequence before the detected start code in order to prevent mis-detection of the start code at post stages; a 2nd start code detection means 101 that detects the start code from the coded data to which the prescribed data sequence is inserted; and a variable length decoding means 103 that applies variable length decoding processing to the received coded data on the basis of the result of detection of the start code.
