PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a poly-m-phenyleneisophthalamide based porous membrane having heat resistance and a high Young's modulus which is suitable for use as the battery separator membrane, the bag filter of an incinerator, the OA cleaner for the transfer drum of a copier and the like. SOLUTION: The porous membrane which is composed of a poly-m- phenyleneisophthalamide based polymer and inorganic whiskers and has a specific Young's modulus of 1,200-5,000 km and a porosity of 10-80% at least one direction can be obtained by casting a dope obtained by dissolving/dispersing a poly-m-phenyleneisophthalamide based polymer and inorganic whiskers in an amide based solvent, coagulating the cast membrane in an amide based coagulating solution, washing the coagulated membrane with water, drying and stretching the resulting membrane.
