VEHICLE DETECTING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detecting method which reduces or prevents the misrecognition of a vehicle and its background part. SOLUTION: A difference images between two deciphered B pictures is generated (step S1). Then the difference image is binarized (step S2) and segments where numerals 1 equal to or more than a predetermined threshold are arranged horizontally are extracted (step S3) from the binarized image. Then segments of one or more in the total of numerals of lines right below the segments in the segments are enlarged as part of the vehicle area and the area enlargement is carried out until no segment of one or more in numeral total in the segment is left (steps S6 to S9). The processes at the steps S6 to S9 are carried on until the judgment of a step S11 becomes affirmative. Then the vehicle area is decided (step S13) by merging overlapping rectangles among rectangles generated through the area enlargement. The vehicle area may be detected by dividing the binarized image into areas.
