PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video-recording and reproducing device which displays a caption according to the reproducing direction and reproducing speed of fast-forwarding reproduction or rewinding reproduction, so that the contents of the caption may be readily confirmed, when the device is operated to make fast-feeding or rewinding reproduction. SOLUTION: When a caption is displayed in one row, and at the same time, the caption is switched to the next caption within (s) seconds in a normal reproduction mode, for example, in a fore-fold speed reproduction mode; the next caption is displayed in four lines, and at the same time, the four-line caption is switched to other four-row captions at every (s) seconds; or the four-row captions are displayed one row by one row by waking the captions to be scrolled. IN addition, the caption information is divided into unit caption information at each punctuation mark, and when the mode is set to a one-time speed rewinding reproduction mode, the caption corresponding to the each unit caption information, namely, the caption of each sentence is displayed.
