PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of electronic equipment for personal computer, communication equipment, etc., by manufacturing the shaft of a spindle motor by using a material which has high wear resistance, corrosion resistance and workability and in which the generation of outgas of sulfur and sulfur compounds is suppressed. SOLUTION: The shaft 2 of the spindle motor is constituted of a steel material having a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.20% C, 0.35% Si, 8.00% Mn, >0-0.05% P, 0.15% S, >0-2.00% Ni, 14.00% Cr and the balance essentially Fe. This steel material has corrosion resistance requiring no plating and also wear resistance requiring neither heat treatment nor soft-nitriding. Although there are many cases where Pb addition is necessary to improve machinability in the case of conventional stainless steels, this steel material does not contain Pb at all and accordingly it can sufficiently meet the recent demand for a Pb-free material.
