A friction assembly comprises a friction element and an opposing element. At least the friction element is formed of a base body (2) and a 10-200 micron thick friction coating (3) comprising a chromium-iron alloy on the base body (2). Preferred Details: The chromium-iron alloy contains 10-60% Cr, 0.3-0.5 C, and Fe the remainder. The alloy can also contain 3-25% Mo, 0.4-3.5% B, 3-18% Al, 4-12% Si, 0.5-6% V and 0.5-6% Nb. The friction element is subjected to nitriding or carbonitriding treatment. The friction body has surface roughness (Ra) above 0.5 microns before being coated and a roughness depth (Rz) of 20-100 microns after being coated. The opposing element is made from a steel alloy (such as 16MnCr5, 10OCr6, C45, 80Cr2 or C15), cast iron, a copper alloy or a sintered material (such as a sintered alloy of iron or bronze). Independent claims are given for use of the friction assembly in: (a) a gearbox synchronizing unit which comprises a synchronization bush and a coupling ring connected by friction, directly or via a friction ring provided between them with respective hypoid friction surfaces; and (b) in a blade clutch having straight, flat exterior blades connected to a first shaft and penetrating comb-like into sinusoidal interior blades connected to a second shaft, with friction connection between the exterior and interior blades by pressing against each other.
