PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital image recording and reproducing apparatus, which can retrieve a desired scene quickly by combining searching operation with skip operation. SOLUTION: When fast-forward operation is instructed during normal reproduction operation (state C2), a search operation is performed after transiting to a state C. When the skip operation is instructed during the search operation, transition to the state C3 and the search operation are performed again, after transition to processing P1 and the skipping operation are made. When the normal reproducing operation is instructed during the search operation (state C3), transition to the state C2 and the normal reproducing operation are performed again after transition to processing P2, and the skipping operation corresponding to operation delay are performed.
