The invention relates to a process for preparing a hydrated lime with a large specific surface, by crushing the lime subjected to hydration in the presence of an alcohol. The final product is separated and the by-products are recycled in the process. The lime crushed up to the size of 1...5 mm is hydrated with propyl carbinol having a concentration of 3...50%, depending on the final value desired for the specific surface. The solid : liquid ratio is of 1 : 0.6. The fine fraction of the hydrated lime is separated from the coarse fraction which is ground, while the vapours of water and propyl carbinol are recovered and recycled in the process.
