A multimedia device whose functions can be extended and a method for extending functions are provided. A plurality of extension modules can be removably plugged into a bus or backplane for communication with a main module. The plug in modules can, for example, convert signals from one format into one that can be processed by the main module. The output of the main module may be used to drive the speakers and screen of a television. The invention enables other services, eg World Wide Web, DVD, and their successor services to be displayed on a television set without modification of the set. The method for extending functions involves scanning connectors plugged into the backplane, analysing characteristics of the board attached to the connector and displaying a signal corresponding to the function of the board. |
