A thermo-electric generator comprises a first thermo-electric element mounted in a cavity in a second such element, a rigid conductor extending through a rigid sealing means for the cavity, the expansion of the first element on heating being arranged to be at least equal to that of the second so that the first is not subjected to tensile stress. Fig. 2 shows a thermo-electric device comprising a cup-shaped element 10 of stainless steel or iron alloy containing the other element 11 composed for example of lead selenium and tellurium. The sealing arrangement comprises a brass collar 16 attached to element 10 and surrounded by a support and cooling means 21. A sleeve 17b is attached to collar 16 and sealed by a glass seal to sleeve 17a which is attached to pin 14 connected to contact electrode 13 bonded or fused to element 11. Electrode 12 provides contact at the hot junction between elements 10 and 11. Pin 14 is connected via flexible connector 20 to lead 19b. The materials and dimension of elements 10 and 11 are chosen so that expansion conditions arising during use result in no tensile stress being applied to element 11. The cavity including element 11 may contain an inert gas. The arrangement may be assembled as described in Specification 775,968, which also gives details of a suitable composition for element 11.
