PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a MR type thin film magnetic head capable of drastically enhancing frequency characteristics and provided with e.g. a TMR element or a CPP-GMR element. SOLUTION: The MR type thin film magnetic head is provided with a lower shielding layer, a MR laminated body formed on the lower shielding layer and in which current is made to flow in a direction vertical to its laminated surface, an upper gap layer of a non-magnetic conductive material laminated on the MR laminated body, an insulation gap layer of an insulating material formed between the lower shielding layer and the upper gap layer and an upper shielding layer laminated on the upper gap layer and constituted in such a manner that the film thickness of the insulation gap layer is thicker than the film thickness of the upper gap layer.
