PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which is constituted to shorten the preparing time of data for shading correction and to improve the shortening effect of reading time. SOLUTION: When the light from a light source 3 is projected upon an original 11 placed on contact glass 2 and the reflected light from the original 11 is reflected by means of scanning mirrors 5, 6, and 7 to form an image in a CCD 9 through an image forming lens 8, this image reader reads a white reference member installed to the end section of the contact glass 2 for correcting the sensitivity fluctuation of the CCD 9, and the illuminance fluctuation of a light source 3 (refer to Fig. 1). The white reference member is composed of a white reference sheet 10 which is provided in a state where the sheet 10 can be wound up by means of take-up rollers 12 and 13.
