PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make both a double-face transmission function and a book manuscript transmission function available at the same time and make an image reproducible in the same spread state as that of an original manuscript at the receiving side. SOLUTION: For double-face transmission of a book manuscript, it is decided whether page information to be sent by a post message signal is generated by the same sequence as in a normal double-page transmission (normal manuscript transmission mode: S2) or by the reverse sequence (book manuscript transmission mode: S3). In an image transmission loop, the data is checked page by page to find out if each page contains an image to be transmitted (S4), and if there is an image, the image is transmitted (S5), and for each page the page information is generated either by the sequence of FS, RS, FS... (in the case of normal transmission) or by the sequence RS, FS, RS... (in the case of a book manuscript transmission mode) based on the above determination, and that information is sent by the post message signal.
