PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a product supporting B4-size manuscripts in the monochromatic receive mode but A4-size manuscripts only in the color receive mode, reports by DIS a maximum receivable manuscript size of B4 and a color receiving function provided but cannot receive a color picture of the B4 size sent from the transmit side, or the product may report by DIS a maximum receivable manuscript size of B4 and no color receiving function provided again, resulting in changed contents of DIS which may cause an apparatus at the transmit side to malfunction. SOLUTION: A reporting means reports to a party side such information that, if receiving is impossible in a designated communication mode after a transmitter designates this mode for a reported receiving capacity, this side may report a lowered receiving capacity again.
