PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light emitting element which can prevent return light in its enclosure from becoming stray light that obstructs the using purpose of the emitting element. SOLUTION: This semiconductor light emitting element 5 is constituted in such a way that a columnar pedestal 13 is erected in the emitting direction of laser light on the front surfaced of a stem 11 and a plate-like sub-mount 15 is arranged on the pedestal 13. On the sub-mount 15, a semiconductor light emitting chip 17 which emits laser light in the emitting direction is arranged. The chip 17 is electrically connected with two lead wires 19 extended through the stem 11. On the front face 13a of the pedestal 13, particularly, a blackbody coating film 29 which functions as a light absorbing film is formed.
