The container comprises a box having a thermally insulated wall (12) defining a cavity within which an item such as a drink can be stored. The cavity has a removable cover (6) which is also thermally insulating. The cover is released by a pushbutton (60) and includes an integral handle (50). At the front of the box there is a heating and/or cooling device - for example a Peltier module having heat exchangers co-operating with the inside of the box, and the outside environment. Vents (20,22) are provided at the front of the box for the heat exchangers. The box is specifically designed to fit on the seat of a vehicle, and may be attached to the seat belt (14, 14a) with fittings for this purpose.
