PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a position which can be used as a recommended position at the time of determining a reproduction start position. SOLUTION: When a decision is made that genre information can become a representative screen at step S2, an evaluation for detecting a representative screen is determined depending on that genre information and the type at step S3. At step S4, an evaluation determined at step S3 is recorded, as representative screen information, on a recording medium. The recorded evaluation value is utilized when the representative screen of a reproduction start program or the recommended reproduction start position in a program is presented to a user at the time of reproduction.
