PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer of a ferromagnetic metal thin film which can more effectively suppress curling, which has excellent traveling durability and excellent touching property with a head to make ultrahigh-density recording at high rotation possible. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a Cr alloy base layer L1, CoCr magnetic layer L2 and protective layer L3 successively and each formed by a vacuum film formation method on a nonmagnetic supporting body 10. The nonmagnetic supporting body 10 is prepared in such a manner that the difference in mechanical strength in the plane, namely, the differenceΔn between the maximum and minimum of the refractive index is <=1.5×10-3.
