PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve data transmission efficiency of a communication system used by a communication unit where a data transmission rate is variable for the header part and the data part of a packet. SOLUTION: In the communication system used by the communication unit where a data transmission rate is made variable depending on the header part 1 and the data part 2 of a packet, a sender side communication unit includes an error check code to the header part 1 and transmits only the header part 1. On the occurrence of a header error when a receiver side communication unit receives a signal denoting detection of an error to the sender side communication unit or the sender side communication unit receives no reply from the receiver side communication unit even after the lapse of a time to receive a signal denoting no error in the header part 1 or to receive the signal denoting the detection of the error, the sender side communication unit transmits only the header part 1 again. The sender side communication unit transmits the data part 2 after the sender side communication unit receives the signal denoting no error in the header part 1.
