PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium which achieves the transfer of magnetic domain walls in the desired track width by the control of magnetic characteristics, is excellent in mass productivity and enables high density recording and reproduction. SOLUTION: In the magneto-optical recording medium comprising a first magnetic layer 3 which functions as a magnetic domain wall transferring layer, a third magnetic layer 5 which functions as a recording layer and a second magnetic layer 4 which controls exchange interaction between the first and second magnetic layers, the first magnetic layer 3 comprises heavy rare earth- iron family metal amorphous thin films stacked in such a way that the Curie temperatures of the films rise stepwise from the second magnetic layer 4 side by a certain temperature differenceΔTc as a unit.
