SLIDING DOOR FOR WHEELCHAIR ENTRY

A wheelchair entry is provided for a motor coach which includes a sliding door mounted in a side of the motor coach and a wheelchair lift mechanism housed in a luggage compartment below the sliding door. The sliding door is mounted on a track which permits a drive mechanism to be coupled directly to the door along a top side of the doorway which receives the door therein. The drive mechanism is coupled to the wheelchair lift mechanism using an interlock mechanism which controls operation of the drive mechanism depending upon the condition of the lift mechanism to ensure safe operation of the door. The do or panel which encloses the luggage compartment housing the lift mechanism therein includes an opening therein which is suitably sized to receive the lift mechanism therethrough in operation such that the door panel is not required to be opened and thus the door panel is not obstructive to the doorway or adjacent luggage compartments.
