PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of increasing recording efficiency by suppressing an eddy current generated in an upper magnetic pole and shortening the length of a magnetic path composed of the upper magnetic pole and a common shielding layer, and also a recording density corresponding to high-frequency recording. SOLUTION: This magnetic head is provided with a lower magnetic pole 7 made of a soft magnetic material, a recording gap layer 10, and an upper magnetic pole 12. The upper magnetic pole is disposed oppositely to the lower magnetic pole via the recording gap layer on a front gap part, and the upper magnetic pole is brought into contact with the lower magnetic pole on a back gap part. The upper magnetic pole is, (a) made of a highly soft magnetic material having saturated magnetic flux density set equal to that of the lower magnetic pole or higher, (b) provided with a slit 14 filled with an electromagnetically insulated insulator in gaps and disposed in a direction from the front gap part to the back gap part, (c) and a coil arranged to roll spirally in an insulating material disposed around the upper magnetic pole.
