PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device capable of efficiently receiving data without interrupting data on the way of recording in the case of receiving data from an external device and writing the received data to a medium. SOLUTION: When the size of data provided from a transfer source is unknown, a signal processing/system control part 203 counts data size simultaneously with the reception of the data, and when the data size is smaller than size allowed to be recorded in the medium 205 or regulated size, continues the reception of data and records the data in the medium 205. At the time of judging that the data size is larger than the size allowed to be recorded in the medium 205 as the counted result of the data size, whether the data can be recorded by substituting the medium or not is judged, and when the data can be recorded, a medium substitution instruction is displayed on a display means 206 and the reception of data is continued. At the time of judging that the recording of the data is impossible even when the medium is substituted, the reception of data is interrupted.
