The direct fuel injection system, to inject a fuel/air mixture into the cylinder combustion zones (15), delivers a virtually cylindrical fuel jet stream (21) into the cylinder towards the piston head (5). The fuel jet stream is deflected by a recess (23) at the piston head, to form a fuel film at the cylinder wall and the fuel is broken down into droplets (25) for evaporation.
