The carrier structure of an automobile body has a honeycomb or foam shock absorbing insert (102,103) in the space (100) between the side wall (79) and the outer cladding (88,89,92). On a side impact, the forces from the outer cladding distort it against a counter surface at the side wall. The hollow zone holds the absorber within it, at least partially in a positive fit.
