An authentication device using data of at least a partial area of an eye retina, said device comprising illumination means for forming an illumination channel, said illumination means comprising a first light source, in particular an infrared light source, provided for generating a first light beam in order to illuminate said partial area of said retina, said device further comprises imaging means arranged in an imaging channel and ending in an image sensor for forming an image with light reflected by said retina, said illuminating means and said imaging means comprise an eyepiece applied into said illumination and said imaging channel, said eyepiece being provided of focusing light originating from said first light source at a first point in said illumination channel substantially corresponding to a position where a pupil of said eye has to be positioned, said eyepiece being further provided for focusing said reflected light on an image plane recordable by said image sensor. The device optionally further comprises positioning and eye fixation means.
