The invention relates to an assistance system which is used to select a route, comprising a computer, a memory and an input and an output device, wherein each route is described by means of travel-influencing route parameters which are stored in the memory. When search criteria are inputted, a specific route is selected by the computer and outputted via said output device. According to the invention, the computer determines macroscopic route characteristics for each route on the basis of the travel-influencing route parameters.Said characteristics can be interrogated by inputting search criteria for macroscopic route characteristics.
