Process comprises introducing metallic powder and foam-forming particles into propellant gas; accelerating the gas/particle mixture at at least a critical particle speed onto a metallic substrate; and simultaneously or subsequently thermally treating the coating on the substrate so that the foam former expands and the metal particles are softened under the influence of the expanding gases. Preferred Features: The critical particle speed is 300-1200 m/s, which is sufficient to achieve an 80% effective particle coating. The metal particles are made of Al, Al alloys, Mg, Mg alloys, Zn, bronze and all metals of the same class having a low melting point. The foam former is titanium hydride, calcium carbonate, nitrates or sulfates.
