The seatbelt tensioning device has a tubular housing (14) attached to the automobile body, enclosing a gas generator and at least one acceleration body, for transmitting the drive force of the gas to a seatbelt tensioning element, upon release of the seatbelt tensioning device. The shock impulse upon release of the gas generator is damped by a deformable retaining element (16) for the housing of the seatbelt tensioning device.
