The invention relates to nucleic acid sequences which code for a protein with homogentisate phytyl transferase activity, to the use of these nucleic acid sequences for producing transgenic organisms such as transgenic plants with an increased tocopherol and tocotrienol content, to a method for producing plants with an increased tocopherol and/or tocotrienol content, and to the transgenic plants themselves.
