Production of plywood, comprises staining the top veneer and optionally other plies in an aqueous bath under pressure; drying and lacquering the exposed surface; applying a cohesive layer of viscous, curable impregnant to one side of the stained top veneer; precuring the impregnant; and completing the cure during press molding at elevated pressure and temperature. Production of plywood, comprises: (i) staining the top veneer and optionally other plies in an aqueous bath under pressure at 105-115 deg C; (ii) drying and lacquering the exposed surface of the preform; (iii) applying a cohesive layer of viscous, curable impregnant to one side of the stained top veneer; (iv) precuring the impregnant, so that it remains flexible; and (v) completing the cure during press molding at a pressure of /> 200 N/cm<2> and a temperature of /> 120 deg C.
