A method and system for reliably and cost effectively operating a turbocharged diesel engine (9) by injecting propane in gaseous form from a vehicle mounted tank (1) into the engine by the use of a fuel pressure regulator valve (4) responsive to the boost pressure of the engine turbocharger to adjust fuel flow correspondingly. A safety switching arrangement (3) requires manual reactivation of the system each time the engine is restarted.
