PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shape memory alloy with which disadvantages of the conventional general shape memory alloy can be removed and a great bidirectional shape memory effect can be provided, and also to provide a method for treating shape memory alloy for obtaining the alloy. SOLUTION: A shape memory alloy stock is subjected to steps of: forming a microcrystal structure having practically uniform crystal size; and properly arranging crystallographic orientation in a direction practically suited to a predetermined moving direction. By this method, the shape memory alloy which has fine crystals and practically uniform crystal size and in which crystallographic orientation is properly arranged in the direction practically suited to the predetermined moving direction can be obtained.
