PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out within a short time a gradient determination under a running condition in which an absolute value of an acceleration deviation is reduced. SOLUTION: A comparison means 16 compares an actual acceleration found by an actual acceleration detecting means 12 with a predicted acceleration found by an acceleration predicting means 13. When the predicted acceleration exceeds the actual acceleration, K of small value is set with respect to a smoothing acceleration deviation calculating means 14 which finds a smoothing acceleration deviation D by an arithmetic expression of K.Dn+(1-K).Dp and a ratio of reflecting the acceleration deviation at a present point is reduced. When the predicted acceleration does not exceed the actual acceleration, K of large value is set thereby increasing the ratio of reflecting the acceleration deviation Dn at a present point. Accordingly, by increasing responsiveness of the smoothing acceleration deviation D during running on a downslope road, even when the acceleration deviation Dn is small in an acceleration OFF state, the smoothing acceleration deviation D can be quickly increased, and a selecting of a gear shift map 18a for the downslope road can be quickly carried out at the time of running on the downslope road.
