PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attach to a cylinder block a thermostat for controlling whether cooling water from a water jacket is fed to a radiator or not, in response to a temperature of the cooling water, while evading size-up of the cylinder block. SOLUTION: The thermostat 18 provided with a housing 20 provided with an inlet hole 35 and a outlet hole 36 faced each other, a wax case 24 slidable between a blocking position for conducting blocking between the inlet hole 35 and the outlet hole 36 and a communication position for communicating the inlet hole 35 with the outlet hole 36 and engaged slidably with the housing 20, and wax for allowing the wax case 24 to be operated slidably in response to expansion/contraction accompanied to temperature variation of the cooling water and self-contained in the wax case 24 is attached to the cylinder block 10 to make an axial line of a slide hole 21 parallel to an axial line of a cylinder bore.
