PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect and correct the positional deviation of the subscanning direction of a beam with simple constitution. SOLUTION: In a position H1 where the beam is deviated in a +Y direction, deflection elements 10-1 and 10-2 are scanned. In a position H2 where the beam is not deviated positionally (within permitted range), reflection elements 10-1 and 10-3 are scanned. In a position H3 where the beam is deviated in one direction, the deflection elements 10-1 and 10-4 are scanned. When the position of the beam in the subscanning direction is deviated, a signal generated in a light receiving element 10-5 differs and the positional deviation of the subscanning direction Y is detected based on the signal.
