The wire bonder includes a lens system (12) and a camera (13) for determining the position of a connection surface (2). An optical axis (23) of the lens system lies at an angle (alpha1) to the vertical (21), so that the tip of a capillary (10) is directly visible in the camera image prior to meeting the connection surface.
