PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for efficiently producing a wholly aromatic polyester excellent in color tone, and a molding material excellent in hydrolysis resistance. SOLUTION: A wholly aromatic polyester is produced by subjecting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, an aromatic diol and a diaryl carbonate each having a specified structural formula to melt polymerization in the presence of a nitrogeneous organic compound having a frontier electron density on the HOMO side on a nitrogen atom of 5.3-10 and a boiling point of 150-350 deg.C. The process involves the use of the aromatic dicarboxylic acid, aromatic diol and diaryl carbonate each in a specified number of moles. The molding material is produced by the melt molding of the obtained polymer, and gives a 2 mm-thick molded plate having a haze value of 15 or lower, with an increase in haze value of at most 50 after immersion in water at 120 deg.C for 100 hr. |
